Can acrylic sheets be an ideal choice for aircraft windows?

As a medium connecting passengers with the sky, aircraft windows not only require extremely high safety and durability but also need to balance light weight and optical performance. In traditional perception, glass is often regarded as the preferred material, but after the rise of acrylic sheets in China, they are rewriting the rules in this field.

Acrylic sheets are not new in the aviation field. As early as World War II, the excellent performance of acrylic had attracted the attention of the military. For example, due to its high light transmittance and impact resistance, acrylic sheets were used in fighter jet windshields and tank observation windows, and even became a key material in the bulletproof tests of the U.S. M16 rifle. This historical accumulation has laid the foundation for the application of acrylic sheets in modern aviation.

What's more noteworthy is that some window frames and transparent interior components of modern civil aviation aircraft also use acrylic materials. Its lightweight property (weighing only half of glass) significantly reduces the aircraft's own weight, thereby improving fuel efficiency.

The impact resistance strength of acrylic sheets is 17-20 times that of ordinary glass. Even under extreme temperature differences at high altitudes or accidental impacts, they can effectively avoid the risk of fragmentation and ensure passenger safety. For example, the impact-resistant panels of Tomson Technology have extremely strong weather resistance, which can resist ultraviolet radiation and low-temperature environments for a long time, preventing yellowing or embrittlement.

Aircraft windows need to ensure clear visibility for passengers, and the light transmittance of acrylic sheets is as high as 92%, far exceeding that of ordinary glass, which is 85%. This feature not only enhances the viewing experience but also reduces the energy consumption of cabin lighting.

Acrylic sheets are easy to cut, bend, and thermoform, which can meet the complex design requirements of streamlined aircraft portholes. At the same time, their lightweight characteristic (with a density of only 1.18g/cm³) provides more possibilities for reducing the weight of the aircraft fuselage.
